    Immigrant Exodus

    Enforcement fueling immigrant exodus

    By Devona Walker
    Staff Writer
TULSA — Nowhere in the state has the immigration battlefield been more bloodied than in Tulsa. And nowhere has the exodus of Hispanic immigrants been more pronounced. Those on both sides of the argument say enforcement has been fueling the fire.

The Tulsa County sheriff's office is the only law enforcement agency in the state to have officers trained to enforce federal immigration laws. It has detained and helped to deport more than 1,000 illegal immigrants since July.

The Greater Tulsa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce estimates that between 15,000 and 25,000 Hispanic immigrants have left the city in the last few months. Hispanic religious leaders there say they have seen their congregations reduced roughly by half.

"Some people think it's a federal issue, but so is robbing a bank. You just don't ignore it when you see it happening, if you are law enforcement,” said Tulsa County Sheriff Stanley Glanz, who has 30 officers dually trained in enforcing federal immigration law. Since July, when training was completed, his department has been delivering an average of 85 illegal immigrants per month to the Department of Homeland Security for deportation.

Arrests made by Tulsa County Sheriff's deputies have resulted in a decline in the jail population of about seven percent, or 100 inmates. Glanz says federal immigration law gives him an additional tool to get undesirables off the street.

"We are identifying and removing what we call frequent flyers, people we consider major criminals,” Glanz said, adding that he has been surprised by hesitation from other law enforcement agencies.

Long as they don't close my favorite Mexican food suppliers I don't have a gripe, the day I go to 3rd and Lewis for a Mexican hot dog, tacos or burrito and find it gone, then you got problems bub.

I have a question, are they really exiting, or just hiding?  Still a lot. I read that Tulsa Police have arrested and delivered over 1,000 to INS. They sure keeping it quiet, not like Muskogee.

The Hispanics are actually leaving, they may go somewhere else to hide, but the one's that you don't see here, are gone. I know for a fact that many have stayed in America, just not around Tulsa area. I know one lady that still babysits 12 children, they aren't the same one's that she used to watch either. I've noticed that so many apartments are becoming empty, also. So many are still in Oklahoma though, just not around Tulsa. (cricket)

I'm trying to decode that post.. However... I agree.... people are STILL talking about it. My favorite part so far is how they just HAPPENED to stop two car loads of illegals and suddenly on the news it was "cracking down" Give me a break.
Did you really think they would leave America just because Oklahoma says get out? Ha! They risk their lives coming over here. They will just move on over to a different state. Personally I don't see why they don't just migrate on up to Canada. Canada seems to be welcoming them with open arms.

I heard on the tv. the other day that Oklahomas panhandle is asking for illegals to come there and work and put their children in school, they stated they don't have many places to rent, but they can work something out, they also stated that it would help their economy out. If this article ran on UNIVISION, I'm sure they went that way. (cricket)

Either 48 or 52(depending on what source you read) captured in Muskogee because they were weaving, speeding or driving recklessly. Compared to the way other law enforcement agencies are upholding the law, that really IS cracking down. I used to ride a bus from Carlsburg, Calif, to Monterey once in awhile to visit my sister, the Calif. Feds. would stop the bus, and check for illegal Mexicans, I was always forced to speak, show ID and tell them all sorts of stuff, I was light skinned and red headed, never did figure out why they singled me out, but they did. I doubt the police here pull people over just because they are dark with black hair, we have too many middle eastern, Indians, and Native Americans who drive, those people must have given the cops a reason to check them is all I can say, I don't have a problem with it, if I was driving funky they would sure as heck pull me over and most likely give me a ticket, and if I did'nt have a DL, insurance, ID or whatever, I would go to jail too. Be legal, or Be Arrested, that is it.
