Man gets suspended sentence in child's rape

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) - A 44-year-old Muskogee man is being given probation after pleading guilty to raping a 6-year-old girl.

Vincent Martin LeCompte was given a 20-year suspended sentence Thursday as part of a plea deal on the first-degree rape charge.

Assistant District Attorney Shannon Otteson says prosecutors agreed to the deal because the victim already has testified three times.

A statement from the mother of the girl says the girl is traumatized and in counseling.

I don't know if it is just me, but I hate to turn on the news anymore, I can take the stories of mans inhumanity to man as long as they are adults, but it seems more and more everyday innocent babies and kids are falling victim to parents or other adults and being brutally abused and murdered for no reason. Are you all as distressed and bothered about this as I am? Why do you think this is happening so much now? Is it possible to stop it? What can we do to stop it? One of my favorite quotes is by Joan Ganz Cooney; "Cherishing children is the mark of a civilized society", what does that say about the US?

first i don't want this to be on tv...

my nephew has a history of sexually abusing girls and boys. Now he is expecting to have a little girl. My gut tells me that this shouldn't happen but I don't know what I can do about it. Our family doesn't know if the girl he is with knows his history. What can I do to protect that baby from being abused?

Although much of the public attention on child sexual abuse is focused on strangers who abduct children off the streets and out of yards, the real risk to children is much closer to home. 90% of the people who molest children are known and trusted by the children and their parents.

To prevent abuse we need to be able to recognize the behaviors that indicate that someone is a potential risk AND to take action to intervene and stop abuse before it happens.

I am available tonight to answer questions about what to watch for and how to respond if you suspect that someone is abusing a child or if you suspect that a child is being or has been abused. Also, if you are being abused or know someone who is being abuse, I can help you take action to protect yourself and get the help you need to stop the abuse and start to heal.

Hi Sharon,
Thanks for taking time to answer some questions for us. I'm privy to sexual abuse years ago. The victim was about 4 years old. It was her Grandfather. Her Mom gained knowledge of the abuse by the child telling her with a jovial mood. The abuse was oral. The Mom told her girl child to let her know if it ever happened again. To make it short... The Mom beat the crap out of her father and he went to jail. How much, if, when, do you talk to a child about it. She doesn't remember and probably won't unless it's talked about. I can't remember when I was 4. Can you? Should it be left out of her history? Will talking about it do more harm than good?
