AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - The Dutch government says it will lift a long-standing ban on pit bulls because it did not lead to any decrease in bite incidents.

Agriculture Minister Gerda Verburg has informed parliament of the decision, which follows the advice of a commission of experts appointed to review the policy.

Instead, the country will focus on enforcing local leashing laws and owner education programs.

Euthanasia of pit bulls upsets would-be adopter

By DAVID SCHULTE World Staff Writer
5/1/2008

On Saturday, Sam Thompson asked to adopt the two pit bull terriers he had taken to the Tulsa Animal Shelter.

But despite his pleas, the dogs were euthanized Wednesday in accordance with the shelter's policy, which prohibits the adoption of pit bulls.

"They appeared very friendly, but we, as a policy, do not adopt out pit bulls or pit bull mixes," said Jean Letcher, manager of the Animal Shelter.

The policy was implemented be cause "pit bulls have been used in baiting and have been trained to fight," she said. "They have been trained by unscrupulous, unethical individuals who commit criminal acts."

She said Thompson appeared to have the dogs' well being in mind, but the decision to kill the dogs crushed the 57-year-old Wisconsin man, who travels with his job to remove dents from automobiles that have been damaged by hail storms.

"I am a dog lover -- an animal lover," said Thompson. "They don't cheat me; they don't lie to me; they don't steal from me.

"If they bite you, it's usually because you deserved it, and it's the only way that they can defend themselves."

Thompson thinks officials at the animal shelter were wrong to euthanize the pit bulls, and a 5-month-old state appellate court ruling seems to agree with him.

Last November, the Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals ruled that Oklahoma City's animal shelter policy conflicted with a state law that bans municipalities from "breed specific" regulation of potentially dangerous dogs.

"The plain meaning of the statute forbids (the) City from regulating potentially dangerous or dangerous dogs by breed," the ruling states. "The Policy adopted by (Oklahoma) City's Animal Welfare Superintendent does just that. Therefore, the Policy is in conflict with the statute and must fail."

Letcher said she was unaware of the court decision, and she stood by the shelter's policy of euthanizing any pit pull whose owner does not claim it within three business days.

"I have not seen the law and have not had a chance to talk with the city legal," Letcher said.

"Until we hear differently from the city legal, that policy will stay in place."

Calls placed by the Tulsa World to city attorneys and other officials were not re turned Wednesday afternoon.

Thompson said he knows very little about Oklahoma laws, but added that he knows a friendly pet when he sees one.

He is also very familiar with the pit bulls, because they wandered into his repair shop on Sheridan Road near 41st Street on April 23.

One was tan and weighed about 40 pounds. Its companion was black with a white chest and was slightly smaller, he said.

In a matter of minutes, the dogs made a lasting impression on Thompson.

"There were 10 to 11 workers in the shop, and they (the dogs) must have licked every one of them," he said. "Those dogs were not mean."

When he called the animal shelter, he thought he was doing the right thing, he said. The idea of claiming another person's pets as his own never entered his mind, and he thought their owner might find them there.

"You just can't steal a man's dogs," said Thompson, who has owned pets since he was a child growing up on a farm.

Now that the pit bulls are dead, Thompson knows what he won't do should more stray dogs ever enter his shop.

"I am not going to call the animal shelter again, because I know what they did to those dogs," he said.

"I am not going to be responsible for a dog being put down -- that's a man's best friend."

Protection from Pit Bulls

Buy some Porcupines! lol

Pit Bulls Attack, Again!

Teen saves 5-year-old from dogs

A Tulsa teen saved a child who was being attacked by a pair of pit bulls Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Cody Phillips, 17, was cleaning the garage when he heard his mother scream, "They're attacking him."

"Him" was a 5-year-old boy who had wandered into a neighbor's yard.

Phillips, a Union High School student, rushed to the child's aid, scaring the dogs away.

"He's a hero," said Sgt.
DEL CITY, Okla. -- A metro city has backed off trying to enforce a law regarding pit bulls after a district judge overturned its controversial ban.

Hundreds of people in Del City have been ticketed for violating a city ban on having pit bulls. According to state law, however, the city cannot ban a specific breed of dog.

Del City officials said they disagree, saying it's a safety issue.

Residents who oppose the ban said the reversal is a victory for anybody who owns a pit bull.

Wallace the Pit Bull

I was just thinking there might be some APBT enthusiasts here who haven't heard about Wallace. He's a great representative for the breed, a rescue dog that does frisbee competitions. He actually won the National Championships this last time around, beating out border collies and lots of other more traditional breeds. Lots of people think that "oh, any dog can do that," because the disc people make it look easy. But its quite challenging, and physically demanding. The dog has to have a lot of drive, and be able to focus on the handler in a distracting environment. Plus, they've got to be in top condition. (I'd love to do disc sports with Loki, but the handler has to be in shape, too, which I'm not. LOL)

MIDWEST CITY (AP) -- Midwest City officials say a family is violating a city ordinance by owning two bull terrier dogs. The city passed an ordinance in 1987 that bans the breed as a potential hazard to the public.

Carol and Jerry Stuckey say their two bull terriers are not dangerous.

They are seeking an injunction that would prevent the city from taking the animals away. They also are pursuing a legal ruling that the ordinance is unconstitutional.

Midwest City Attorney Katherine Bolles says the dogs will be seized if they are spotted in public, but that the city is not authorized to go into the couple's home or fenced back yard to take them.

I was savagely attacked by a dog (not pitbull) a mix breed dog that i had for eight years, I never abused the dog or mistreated him in anyway, I treated the dog as one of the family. I currently have several stitches in my right arm and too many to count in my right leg, I have several puncture wounds as a bonus also. The dog had to be shot to get him off of me. And believe me people if a pitbull steps one foot in my yard i will shoot it where it stands or any other dog. We even got a 400 lb. pig once. There has been two pit bulls dropped off here in the last year. The first one had puncture wounds all around his neck. I put two and two together (as most of you have already done) and decided this pit had been in a dog fight and had lost. He was scared of his own shadow and very skinny. My husband didn't like it but I fed the Pit every time I fed my Rottweiller. His neck healed and he became the sweetest dog I'd ever been around. He got to where he wasn't the least bit skittish around me or my husband but remained very leary of strangers. I told my husband I was going to keep feeding him till I could find him a good home. He didn't like it but knew me well enough to know I wouldn't let any animal go hungry no matter how much he protested. We had this dog for about three months. My husband fixed up a nice warm place for him to sleep because my Rottweiller would not let him in the yard or the house. He got plenty of love and attention but I still wanted to find him a family of his own.

My son drives an eighteen wheeler and is on the road alot. He came over on one of his trips home to visit. When he went to leave the little Pit came running out to see who it was. My son ask who the Pit belonged to and I told him it was a stray I was keeping till I could find it a home. He asked if he could take it home. I said, "How are you gonna take care of a dog when you're on the road all the time?"

"I'll take him on the road with me." he told me.

"Then take him." I said and off they went.

He wasn't leaving for a few days so the dogs first night was at my son's house that he shares with two other guys and his girlfriend. The next day my son called me and told me that the dog had immediately taken to John. When it came time to to go to bed, the dog had curled up at the foot of John's bed and stayed there all night. He waited till John took him out to potty and has never messed in the house to this day. He is constantly around a 3 year old boy and a 5 year old girl. The kids can do anything to this dog and all he does is play with them like a kitten. He runs from them, then he chases them. They throw a ball, he goes gets the ball. He brings it back to them then stands there wagging his tail till they throw it again.

I believe this dog lost a fight and shamed someone so bad they wanted to be shed of it, no pun intended. If I had chose to ignore this dog he probably would have died of starvation, shot by some heartless hot head or the gas chamber at the City Pound. Because I kept him and waited till I found someone to take him, he now has a full time job as guardian angel to two babies that love him more than words can say.

I know animals, all kinds since I was raised on a farm, and none of them are bad when you love them (except for bulls around a cow in heat and then I advise everyone to watch their back). I don't care what anyone says, I think anyone wanting to get a pet should be screened as thoroughly as someone wanting to adopt a child.

I wish there was a way to prohibit people from owning a dog that is kept tethered to a pole in the back yard, or even loose in a fenced in area, where the only attention they get is at feeding time. Here the culprit comes out of the back door with a bowl in his/her hand, sits it in front of the dog, rubs the dog head as the dog goes for the food then retreats back into the house. The dog then lays down and waits for the next feeding. The only other excitement he gets is what lays within the circle of his confinement, which sometimes is not even a shelter.

I have a fenced in yard and a dog door. Mine comes is when she wants to and leaves when she wants to. She rides with me in my truck on short trips when it's not too hot. If I sit in her spot on the couch I will move if she wants it. Feeding time includes two cans of Alpo every day, she picks the flavor, and for dessert she gets part of my steak or chicken. She will not eat dark meat chicken nor the fat on beef or pork. If I give her a bone, it's a big bone and she never eats them, but she likes to lay them down between her paws and guard them. When she wants something in particular she has a way of letting me know. She follows me in the kitchen and points out what she wants. If she has chosen a steak she will stand there, watch me open it and put it in the skillet. When she is satisfied I got it going, she goes in and lays on the couch to wait for me to bring it to her.

I think of her as my child AND best friend. I try to get her things she would get for herself if she had any money. She don't get fed garbage or scraps, she eats with me. I've had her since the day she was born, her mother was also my dog. She is eight years old. Just recently I found out she has a heart condition that is common with Rottweillers that kills most of them before they reach 2 or 3. The vet has trouble believing she is still going. I belive she is still going because she is so loved and very cared for.

Pit Bulls / In Part, Is It a Breeder Problem?

Has anyone considered the breeders of these dogs?

The predisposition for good temperment, or aggressive temperment is in part determined by genetics. Breed kind dispositions to each other, & you get a better chance of having a litter w/compliant, forgiving dispositions. Breed aggressive to aggressive, & guess what you get...

So many who breed Pit Bull Dogs breed FOR aggression. Perhaps it's the breeders who should be held partly responsible. No, I'm not letting owners off the hook. Read on.

Take an aggressive puppy, & socialize him/her, add in a well structured home, along with kind, consistent obedience training, & you can turn that puppy around to make a compliant, obedient pooch who understands his or her pack structure, but it's easier if you're working with a puppy that is sired by, & out of dogs with excellent, compliant dispositions.

This isn't rocket science! I breed quality Quarter Horses. Disposition, with a kind mind, & a people orientated personality are a must in both the sire, & the dam. With out a willing disposition, you can have the most athletic equine, but you'll never achieve a true partnership, nor will you ever get all that horse has to give.... simply 'cause he or she doesn't wanna be compliant. To get good minded foals, you have to breed a good minded stallion to a good minded mare.

This concept follows suit with any breed, be it horse, dog, cat, etc. It's genetics, that's the base line starting point.

If breeders would breed for a family type, gentle, kind dog, no matter what the breed, each breed would improve, individual by individual, litter by litter, & dogs would become 'safer', more dependable. Sadly, so many folks who breed Staffordshire Terriers (Pit Bull Dogs) are breeding for the aggressive temperment, & that should stop.... NOW.

Those who own them, or for that matter, a dog of any breed, or mixed breed, should socialize that animal, & do at least basic obedience training. WE are responsible for our pets, & their behavior. That should start pre conception, & continue from whelping thru elderly age.

Don't bring a pup home, put him or her in the back yard, or God forbid, on a chain, & expect them to grow up well adjusted. It doesn't happen that way. We are their 'pack'. When we bring a dog into our lives, it should be INTO our lives, into our homes, & into our hearts. They need time with us to learn socializing skills, & the pack order. Without that, the pooch hasn't got a 'snowball's chance' to be a 'good dog'.... it matters not the breed.

Lastly, get that pooch spayed, or neutered. A neutered male is far less likely to roam, & get into trouble than an unaltered one. Same goes for females. I won't go into our pet population problem.... Suffice to say, be a responsible pet owner, have your pet spayed or neutered.

And yes, I own a Red Nose Pit Bull. She is a tender, kind creature, yet I can see the underlying tenacity that Pits were originally designed for. She was dumped on the road in front of our farm. When she joined our family, she was promptly spayed, & even tho Red was a yearling then, we began to reshape her outlook on 'pack behavior' with us, cats, our other dogs, & did some basic obedience training on her. I suspect she was dumped because she wasn't aggressive enough for her previous owners, which is sad. She is extremely sensitive, loves children, especially tiny tots, & is very compliant. Red has a home with us for life.

Kat ~

P.S. Don't even let me get started 'bout folks who dump animals....

Stop the Breed Specific Law!

These canines have been abused long enough. They need a break. These are God's creatures. If Pit Bulls are so mean why did they have one on the Little Rascals!!!! There were nothing but kids and other animals around that Pit Bull named Petey. People have taken a strong and beautiful animal and branded it as being a killer when it is far from that. Everyone is focusing on one breed and trying to get rid of it and it doesn't know any better because it was taught to be that way. I'm an avid Pit Bull researcher and over half of the Pit Bulls they show on tv are mix breeds. Most of them don't have any papers. People just need to get their facts straight on the Pit Bull before they speak on this matter. For example: Locking of the jaw, born agressive, natural born killers.........This is just obsurd. Theres just no such thing. Please tell me I'm not alone on this matter.

Its not the animals we need to blame, its us.

Here are some pics of my dogs and family.

appalled

We are an average middle class family of five and we are pitbull owners. The word pitbull carries so many negative conotations that we taught our children to call them bulldogs, when we did we felt like liars. The blonde newswoman showing ten year old foot footage of a respectable dog breeders yard and then telling all her viewers how there is a link between pitbulls and the types of owners. I was appalled that she put us in the same category of the moronic man that she interviewed. A good dog no matter what breed, shouldn't attack a small dog. That is not a tough dog that is a coward. Our house dog a two year old female is very protective of our children but is trained to know the difference. She also knows not to hurt small dogs but, to play with them.We didn't take her to a professional are treat her with kidgloves because she was an aggresivebreed instead, we treated her like a child and taught her right from wrong and spanked her when she was bad. We are responsible with all our dogs. Bulldogs belong on chains with good collars. You wouldn't let your children run free would you. I think everyone is right in saying they need to regulate the owners. I think a fee of 500$ a dog should keep some of the idiots from owning them Thank you
