My wife and I cannot stand to see a dog wondering around, and when we do we alway's try to help it find it's home. We have even been known to bring a couple home with us because we could not find a owner. We have two cockers we bought when they where pups, and they are truly our kids. LOVEM DOG'S

I have a managerie!

I'll start.....
I forgot ... I also sort of collect Betta's. I've had as many as 10 at a time and right now I am down to 6.

We've had assorted other pets over the years like hermit crabs, and gerbils, but thus far I haven't had anything that slithers, on purpose anyway. Wild creepy crawlys don't count although we do have some of the largest night crawlers I've ever seen ( when it comes to fishing worms.) And just for added interest I'll dig night crawlers for my big fish in my 58 gallon aquarium and they go after those worms like they haven't been fed in a month!

next......... who else has pets?

She isn't blind in any eye, she sees great.
They wait for us to get in bed and then take the empty spots, keeping us warm all night.

We got them rawhide bones and toys for X-Mas.

Pet Rules...

To be posted VERY LOW on the refrigerator door - nose height.

  Dear Dogs and Cats,

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate of food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.
The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.
For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years -- canine or feline attendance is not required.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough!
To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our front door:

To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About Our Pets:

  1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. (That's why they call it 'fur'niture.)
3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.

Remember: In many ways, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

1. Eat less.
2. Don't ask for money all the time.
3. Are easier to train.
4. Normally come when called.
5. Never ask to drive the car.
6. Don't hang out with drug-using friends.
7. Don't smoke or drink.
8. Don't have to buy the latest fashions.
9. Don't want to wear your clothes.
10. Don't need a 'gazillion' dollars for college.
  And finally,
11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children.

Just when I open my big opinionated mouth about Pitbulls, fate serves me a plate of crow eat.

I own, or I should say my son is owner( best friend) of a 100 pound German Shepherd named Alexandria, she is all the dog I want and more, she is like having a pony running around.I have posted on the Pitbull issue several times because I truly believe Pit bulls are predisposed to attacking humans and other dogs.My son has talked for years about wanting to own one, but I swore I would never have one on my property.Well......here is where the eating crow comes in, today my daughter and I were off to have breakfast at Panera then go to the Post office, as we stepped out on our patio, we looked down and saw this sad, emaciated little yellow pitbull puppy sleeping curled up in the cats cozy. She would'nt say the dog was pitbull because she knew my views on them, but I knew the second we lifted that sad little bag of bones out of there. I cried for about 45 minutes, even while I was trying to pay my phone bill and talk to Clay Loney on my cell about pot holes, I was bawling like a baby, don't know if he could tell, but I was so broken up over finding this pup in this kind of shape. Anyway, long story short, I have adopted the mutt, I did'nt need another dog to feed, take to the vet or bathe, but guess I got one. I will have him neutered as soon as he is strong enough though, still have a little Pitbull apprehension, guess it will pass if he turns out to be the greatest dog ever.
It doesn't want to let me edit my post, so let me amend it here:

Again, as I offered a long time ago when the discussion first started, I will be out training tomorrow (errr, today) at the Tulsa Dog Training Club between 10:30am and whenever we finish. If anybody wants to talk trash about my dogs, come meet them first.

bahamutt99,

I began a new topic here because I have a few questions about training dogs. I have a full blooded Collie and she is very smart. I've taught her many commands and tricks and she was doing all of these things from just being a few months old. It only seems to take a few tries before she understands what I want her to do in the command that I'm giving to her.

She's learned how to sit, stay, come/stop, lie "down", do "dead dog", crawl, shake hands, UP (at various levels from laying down to sitting - to standing on her hind feet), go home/bedtime (which means go to her kennel and lie down). She'll even open her kennel door with her nose if it's closed but not locked, of course. I've taught her most of what she can do using various signs specifically for her. I've thought about getting her into agility training or some other training courses because she is so smart and learns so quickly ... just not sure because of the following problem.

Her problem is that she gets so happy and excited when she's around new people and new dogs that she is almost beside herself in joyful tail wagging and voicing her excitement. I haven't figured out yet how to help her overcome this particular problem. She loves everyone and wants to show her excitement and friendliness. I don't want to scold her for that, but even giving her the command to lie down when she's excited seems to make her feel she's being scolded.

Do you or anyone else have any suggestions on techniques to teach her how to control her excitement when she's around new people and new dogs.

thanks.....

You know, those dogs'll kill ya!

I don't check these forums very often, but I saw the pets forum and I had to talk about my girl, Loki. Loki is a 3, soon to be 4-year-old APBT. (APBT = American Pit Bull Terrier.) I got her when I was still living in St. Louis, after a 6 year hiatus from the breed. When I moved into my own place with my husband, we decided the time was right for a puppy. (I'd been researching breeders for several years, and had already settled on http://www.matrixkennels.com/ as the kennel I would get my next dog from.)

So. Fast forward a long trip from St. Louis to west Texas and back again, and we've got our beautiful new puppy! Big hassle from day one, none of it caused by the puppy herself. She was the easiest thing I'd ever had the pleasure of raising, housebroken within a month or two, rarely destructive, just awesome all around. It was the city's BSL (breed-specific legislation) which caused us so much trouble. We'd had our 3-month-old puppy for less than a week when a code enforcement truck drove by as we were pottying her on leash in the front yard. Rather than stop and talk to us -- that'd be too much like right -- they sent us a letter saying we had 5 days to remove the "pit bull dog" from the premises. Fortunately for Loki, I was very well-versed on the laws at that point, and knew they couldn't touch us until she was 5 months old. Besides, I already had their exorbitant requirements satisfied, which they'd have known if they'd bothered to check. Insurance, expensive kennel, muzzle, warning signs. Yep, we were set. All set to protect the neighborhood from the 14-pound danger!

Fast forward again to the present. Loki is the best dog I've ever owned. She got he CGC (Canine Good Citizen title) when she was around a year old. Failed it the first time around because she was just too darn friendly and wanted to go say "hi" to the other dog walker. We started weight pulling with her when she was 14 months old, and she got her first few titles easy. In 2006, she got her first obedience title, a UCD (United Companion Dog). She followed up a few weeks later with her TT (Temperament Title). Just last weekend she got her first agility title (UAGI - United Agility Dog I) and the last few points she needed on her UWPCH (United Weight Pull Champion). So that makes her UWPCH UAGI UCD 'PR' Matrix's I Defy Gravity CGC TT WDS.

Those are just her paper accomplishments, which would be enough for most. But Loki is just a good dog in general. She's the kind of dog that can be taken anywhere and be trusted. (Okay, so she didn't like it when the marching band was coming down our street, but what sensitive-eared dog would?) She loves making new friends, shaking hands and kissing babies. She will march in local pet parades, and makes no qualms about dressing up in goofy gear for the enjoyment of the masses. Nor is she above climbing up and sliding down the slide at the playground to amuse children (and her owner). And if you come visit, she's a good hostess; she'll even get you a soda out of the refridgerator.

I know other dogs will follow, and they'll do us and the breed proud. My calling is evidently to aid in the creation of APBT breed ambassadors. But Loki is special. She's the first, and she is my heart. Love ya, girl!

^^Loki in her city-mandated collar. There's justice for you. Slap this ugly thing on my puppy, but let the violent, free-roaming Chow mix around the corner die of old age before you do anything. So glad I live in a state which bars BSL now.

I bought my 8wk old rottweiler in Coweta Oklahoma in December of 1997. At that time my two sons were ages 4 and 7. We named him Blake. Raised with my two other boys and very protective of all 3 of us, he grew to be a member of our family. Last mid - June in 2006 Blake was almost 9 yrs. old. when he ruptured a disk in his back and could not even stand on his feet. I rushed him to his life long vet, his home away from home! He was given treatment and we stayed hopeful that he would pull through this unexpected illness. His size - 120 lbs was a factor and his age was another factor that were not in his favor. This beautifully dispositioned and brilliantly smart k-9 was my shadow for almost 9 yrs. He followed me from room to room, slept at my feet, joined the family in the cellar when it would storm, Enjoyed weekly baths either in the bath tub if it was cold or under the water hose if it was summer, loved going to the vets office for visits, and was envied by most humans for the way he was cared for and thought of! The dog came next in line after the two boys, before the husband and it was no secret! I have never had a pet this human like or as smart as this guy. A few days went by and we got him to his feet. He missed our nightly walks and was saddened by not being able to tag along behind me even if it was just to go to the kitchen to return a glass. He could walk very little and his back legs were weak. He gained enough strength to make it about a half a block or so, everyday was so painful to watch him as he wanted so badly to be the healthy vibrant dog he once was. I had made up my mind years ago I would never let him suffer in pain due to any condition that could not be healed. Finally August 14th I made up my mind to do the hardest thing I ever did in my life! I have been through childbirth twice and a divorce in my life time and the pain this day brought to my soul made all three of those seem like a cake walk. I had him put down. He was not getting better and he had begun to cry and whine with the slightest of movement. I had no home place to bury him and he would be lost if he was not by my side any way, So I had him cremated. Now my best friend can stay near me always. I had tried to contact the people I had gotten him from but the number was nolonger a working number. Every day and night that has went by since August 14th he has made it known to me that he is still with me. Simple and small reminders but unmistakably his presense! His smell, The sound of his light snore at night, The sound of his footsteps behind me, or a warm spot on the floor when I would get up in the morning and put my feet on the floor to get up. He will always be with me. I knew it would be a while before I would be able to care for another pet. But I did know the kind my next pet would be! One day I did find a breeder in Porum Oklahoma. I went down and looked at the puppies unsure if it had been long enough before getting another friend. I took a photo of me and Blake to show the breeder I was visiting and to share my story with them. My youngest son, now 14 was with me. after playing with the puppies and picking one out. I asked my son if he thought I was ready to do this again, he replied that he wasn't sure either. We started talking to the breeder about the pedigree of the puppy and I had Blakes 14 generation pedigree with me. Surprisingly enough - This puppies mother was Blake's brother's daughter, making Blake my puppies great uncle. The choice was then very clear. It was time and it was this puppy! We named him Java. He is wonderful! I have inserted a photo of Blake and one of Java!

My Chinese Crested Puppies!

As you can tell by the user name I am a dog person! I used to have a blue Doberman named Marley that was ill and had to be put to sleep in June. I loved her dearly. I only went for 6 days without a dog. I can't handle not having a dog to come home to after work. I ended up getting two Chinese Crested puppies that are brother and sister. The breeder sent me the pictures of the two dogs she had available and I couldn't make up my mind so I just ended up getting both of them! What a handful they are but so much fun! Their names are Blaze and Bella and what one doesn't think of to get into. . . the other will! I figured that I might as well just get them at the same time and have double the puppy training instead of just getting another one in a year when I would start thinking that the first dog was lonely for another dog. I always do this for some reason when I have small dogs! If you are not familar with this breed they are the ones with no hair except on their heads, feet, and tail. We have had so much fun taking them out and listening to people ask questions like "Are they sick? What are those? Are they dogs?" Yeah, they are kind of funny looking to most people, but I think they are adorable. When I sold my house and decided to move to an apartment, my ex-husband was nice enough to keep my Umbrella Cockatoo Parrot (Kai) and my iguana (Toro) at his house. Kai sometimes talks too much according to my ex, but Toro gets invites to my son's class at school because he is really nice and likes "little people". Toro escaped in the house one day, but Grandma found him when she crawled into bed! She just put him back in his cage. This is my ex's mom, had it been my mom she would have called the exterminator! Gotta love those pets!
