Star-Kist is the major employer in American Samoa employing 75% of the Samoan workforce.

In January, 2007 when the minimum wage was increased from $5.15 to $7.25, Pelosi had American Samoa exempted from the increase so Del Monte would not have to pay the higher wage. This would make Del Monte products less expensive than their competition's.

Last week when the huge bailout bill was passed, Pelosi added an earmark to the final bill adding $33 million dollars for an 'economic development credit in American Samoa'.

Human-pig hybrid embryos given go ahead

A licence to create human-pig embryos to study heart disease has been issued by the fertility watchdog.

This marks the third animal-human hybrid embryo licence to be issued by Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority and the first since the Commons voted in favour of this controversial research last month.

An HFEA spokesman said it had approved an application from the Clinical Sciences Research Institute, University of Warwick, for the creation of hybrid embryos. The centre has been offered a 12 month licence with effect from today, July 1.

The effort at the University of Warwick is led by Professor Justin St John. "This new license allows us to attempt to make human pig clones to produce embryonic stem cells," he said, where embryonic stem cells are able to turn into the 200 plus types in the body.

Two years ago we bought a house through an investor. He padded our credit score and inflated our gross income to the mortgage company. I have to admit we knew he was doing this. He lent us $6000 (he told us to tell the mortgage company we inherited it if asked). We fell behind repaying the loan and he garnished my husband's check. That's fine, we owed it. Now we find out we have paid over the amount! He still wants to continue garnishing! He says I owe $6000 also. Small claims says that we owe as a couple $6000 and not individually. This guy is trying to run a scam! The Small Claims clerk says we can countersue for the money that was garnished over the amount. Who do we complain to? Attorney General's office? FOX 23?

We discuss a lot of stuff here, every once in awhile I try to post something and get a message saying it is a subject that has to be approved. I am pretty radical, but I don't think I post things that are too controversial or inflammatory. I will give you an example, the question: Do you know how many freedoms you have lost in the past 8 years? Are there key words that are recognized automatically and causes this message to come up? Just wondered why some things are so strictly regulated. Has anyone else had this message? Is it just me? I thought I was just a harmless old lady, am I some kind of scary revolutionary anarchist or what?

Don't know what happened to my last post on this subject, don't think I said anything bad enough to cause it to be censored. Anyway, my question was prompted by the Hesparin recall. If you knew your medication was made in China, would you continue to use it? Do you think there should be a ban put on all products made in China due to the poison pet food, poisoned childrens toys, and the latest poison baby toys? Do you believe these products were purposely intended to harm Americans? Do you think it has been one huge coincidence after another? Do you knowingly continue to buy things made in China? Would you take part in a boycott of stores who sell( mostly) products made in China? Would the Chinese treatment of Tibetans play any part in your decision to take part in a boycott?

I have a question, might sound silly, but I just took a $5 bill out of my wallet, and on the lower right corner, it has a huge, like 2inch tall #5 in purple ink. I have never seen this before, is this some new thing or am I about to buy a stale hamburger out of a revolving machine with a counterfeit bill? I seriously have never seen this on a bill before.

BISHOPVILLE, SC (WIS) - After a nasty surprise Thursday morning for one Bishopville resident, she's wondering if the "Lizard Man" is back.

Dixie Rawson of Bishopville sent WIS News 10 an e-mail about a big surprise she got at her home Thursday morning. "The whole front half of our van is chewed up. There are bite marks right through the front grill. Both sides of the van above the wheel wells were bitten and the metal is bent like a piece of paper."

It reminded Dixie of the local legend of the "Lizard Man" that stretches back for decades. Now some are wondering if the Lizard Man is back.

The legend blows in with a brisk winter wind, sending chills through neighbors in Lee County.

"I couldn't believe it, I just couldn't believe it," says Bob Rawson. He looks down at the blood and claw marks on his van. "He literally bit, you can feel where he bit straight through here."

Here are the statements in question

I knew what she meant by using "Oklahoma" and "law" in the same sentence, but I thought it was from the 1930s and was in reference to the "Okies" of Oklahoma and that it meant something like "no law at all." But Madeline says it's from an earlier time and she probably knows, but I've also seen it used in books from the 1930s.

"Oklahoma law" is an archaic term meaning "oddball." I've seen it in old books and newspapers from the 1800s. The article said that the judge based her ruling on federal privacy law as it pertains to medical records and I can see why someone would consider that "oddball" because privacy ends at death. - ~~Madeline~~ I crossed out the name so you can't see who wrote it :-).

I need a fast reply to correct this as I may be banned from the group, I fired off a "You calling me ignorant?" email. I never heard of it.

Has anyone heard of "Oklahoma Law" referanced this way? Or am I correct to refferance them in a fashion with dead sheep?

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Keep an eye on the salsa this Super Bowl Sunday: A researcher inspired by a famous “Seinfeld” episode has concluded that double dipping is just plain gross.

“That’s like putting your whole mouth right in the dip!” George Costanza was admonished on the show after he dipped a chip twice at a wake. That’s not too far off, said Clemson University professor Paul L. Dawson.

Last year the food microbiologist’s undergraduate students examined the effects of double dipping using volunteers, wheat crackers and several sample dips. They found that three to six double dips transferred about 10,000 bacteria from an eater’s mouth to the remaining dip sample.

“I was very surprised by the results,” Dawson said in a telephone interview Thursday. “I thought there would be very minimal transfer. I didn’t think we would be able to detect it.”

The professor said the students’ research didn’t get into the risk behind such a bacteria transfer, but they got the idea.

“I like to say it’s like kissing everybody at the party — if you’re double dipping, you’re putting some of your bacteria in that dip,” Dawson said.

The results of the research are scheduled to be published in the journal Food Safety within the next six months, he said.

A bill was just passed in the Senate which will allow the Indian Tribes to operate charter schools. The reason stated was that it would allow parents to educate their children in schools with a wider variety of choices in curriculum and since charter schools usually concentrate on specific areas of education, the children will have an opportunity to study subjects they could not in public or perhaps even private schools. My question is this, how do you feel about sending your child to one of these schools?

Is anyone in agreement with me that even when school is out there should be a time when your kids have to be in the house? Not just in the "yard" but inside. Last night there were some 13, 14 year olds running around my apartment complex until 1:30 in the morning. My daughter is 14 and she has to be IN the house when it gets dark. If those street lights are on and she's not in here there's hell to pay. On school nights she's in bed by 10:00.

I've heard her talking to friends and they say they don't have a bed time. Am I outdated?!

loose dogs in the nieghborhood

My family walks our dogs in the evenings around the neighborhood. I carry a big martial arts stick to protect us from the stray dogs. Many times I have had to threaten dogs on the street they live on when they charge us. On the 5000 blk of 29th west av. there are two seperate houses the dogs jump the fence and come running.Other times I have seen a pack of three dogs running through carbondale park.

we have quit walking down 25th w avenue on the 4500 block because one household lets thier pit bulls run loose after 5:p.m. They have no fence and thier dogs have left the property to chase people and other dogs. Last May thier male dog bit a child and animal control was called. When the officer arrived.The dogs knocked the screen out of the window and charged The owners did'nt come out until an officer told them their dogs would be shot. They were ordered to chain animals and the male was to be muzzled and both dogs were to be spayed and neutered in 20 days time.

Niether got spayed or nuetered. 20 days later the people, knowing animal. control closes at 5p.m. are still letting the dogs run loose and the female might be pregnant. On another evening my daughter and I were riding bikes on the 4500 blk of 29th w avenue when a doberman mix attacked her bike. Ijumped off mine and threatened the dog with my bike.

the owner came and took the dog and led her away. never said a word of apology. Her nieghbors said it was a standard practice for them to let the dog roost in the front yard.

My point is, the way animal control works, is if the loose animal runs to their fenced yard thier hands are tied, unless the animal has bitten or attacked. They cannot fine the owner unless the owner answers the door to accept the ticket.

Standing In The Rain Waiting On Tulsa Transit

Why can Tulsa not provide adequate shelters at bus stops to keep folks from being soaked by rain waiting for a city bus? Many of the stops don't have benches. Is there anyone at the Tulsa transit authority or city hall that can muster enough creativity to get these bus riders out of the weather? How on earth can you encourage folks to park their cars and ride the bus when they will get to work with their clothes soaked on rainy days? I see babies in strollers, elderly people, all kinds of people, out in the rain(many not only exposed to the elements, but having to stand) waiting for a Tulsa city bus, that's just deporable in a city as large as Tulsa.

Tulsa Bus Riders Stand In The Rain

Why does a progressive city like Tulsa not have benches and coverings for city transit bus stops? Tulsa encourages folks to ride the buses, especially during ozone season, but wants them to stand in the sweltering Oklahoma heat, not to mention the rain, sleet and snow the rest of the year. Can't someone in Tulsa city hall come up with at least a plan for corporations to sponsor benches and coverings with the company getting free advertising on the shelter? How many working folks want to stop using their automobile to ride a Tulsa city bus if it means getting soaked by rain, pelted by hail, etc. Come on Tulsa, it's time to bring the Tulsa bus system current .
