English as the state's official language

Oklahoma City (AP)_Legislation that makes English the official language of Oklahoma has passed teh state House in spite of opponents who say it is divisive and unnecessary.  House members approved the bill 66-32 Wednesday and sent it to the Senate for a vote.  Rep. Randy Terrill of Moore authored the bill and says it would prevent the state from having to provide taxpayer-funded services in a language other than English.  Terrill says more than 30 other states have similar bills. But opponents say it demeans the languages of Oklahoma's 39 ederally recognized Indian tribes and sends the wrong message to the rest of the world.  Rep. Shane Jet of Tecumseh says the measure is closed-minded and not inclusive.  Rep. Jerry McPeak of Warner says it is more about politics than good policy.

UM, They only speak English on the "Price is right", "Star Trek", and "American Idol". So why not? I don't mind other languages and what not but we need to have some kind of standard. Businesses do not have to conform to the 80 plus languages spoken around the world, why does the Govt? In the time of this crisis we need to buckle down and trim the fat.

I would like to RE-LEARN Spanish, yep. I spoke it pretty good years ago, about 20 years ago but never have lived in a community with a Spanish influx. But here in OK I have met quite a few Spanish People, like the Mexican family across the street. They don't speak much English but are very nice.

My daughter is learning Japanese so she broke down and bought the Rosetta Stone software to help her learn it.  She says it's pretty good at immersing you in the language.  Have you heard anything about it?

Re: English as the state's official language

It took me a week or two to learn enough Korean for Jung Jo to tell me that if I was Korean I would be labeled retarded :-)
It took me about 3 days to remember around 40 words and a bunch of phrases. It was enough for very basic talking. In about a month I could listen to people speaking Korean and I could understand most of what they were talking about. At this time I started to get Semi-Fluent in it. But thats the trick, I could listen to people talk Korean all the time and pick out the words, that was a Major help.

I picked up Chinese pretty good because of my boss Sho - Lin (Not of kung fu fame). He would get mad and talk to his wife at work speaking Chinese, if he was mad at one of us, he would speak Chinese but would forget to translate our names into Chinese and we knew we were in trouble. "ming su dow sum, KINDAGREYWOLF"!

So it depends on how much effort you put in it.
    My suggestion.
    Get Rosetta stone.
Get American Music that you know the words to and sung in Spanish and listen to it, so you understand how they speak and talk. That will help reinforce rosetta stone.

Tell your daughter if she wants to learn how to get a Japanese to slap her face, I know a few phrases still:-)

That is the truth i am not really a rude person but when i am tring to talk to some one about my bills{money} i want to be able to understand them. i think that it is ruder of me to have to say what 20 times. i have actually had to ask to speak to someone who speaks clear english on more than one occasion.
