KMYT and Vista Media Center not Working?

Is anyone else having problems getting KMYT-DT (over the air digital) to work with their Windows Media Center?  It shows full signal strength, but when I try to watch it all I get is black.

Don't know what the problem is, but I will have our engineers check it out.

Thanks, I've been reading on the internet and apparently some people said after emailing the engineers for the stations, they were able to find something wrong with the psip data (or something).

OK, I checked with the engineers and they said it is a Vista problem.  Sorry I can't be more help.

Hmm, can you get any details as to what the problem is?  Maybe if I knew I could get some advice from people on the internet who have the same problem and hopefully fix it.

Sorry, I don't know.  They just said it was a Windows problem.

Re: KMYT and Vista Media Center not Working?

MS broke MCE on purpose.  With Vista, MS requires the drivers to read the embedded frequency info so that it can tune to the best frequency.  We are going to have to hassle Hauppage to update their 64-bit drivers until they do it.

Re: KMYT and Vista Media Center not Working?

I have 2 digital tuners from different manufacturers that both have drivers blessed by the evil Microsoft.  I can pick up every local digital channel except KMYT.  I get full signal strength on a channel scan, but it won't tune to the channel.

I hate to deal with this logically, but it sure would seem like there is something wrong with the digital wrapper on KMYT that is causing it not to be picked up correctly by Vista.  I would love to blame Microsoft as they are the devil, but its jsut not adding up.  I've checked with a couple buddies who live in town and also use Vista MCE and they have the exact same symptom, full signal strength, no picture.

Can we get one of the engineers to take more than a passing glance at this?  There is obviously something wrong.

Re: KMYT and Vista Media Center not Working?

See the below post from Chris Matichuk in the link I posted above.  You have to call your tuner mfr and ask them to update their driver.  They aren't updating drivers on their own because no one is complaining.  No one is complaining because everyone thinks it is MS or TV station's fault.  This was on page 8 of my link:

Hi everyone. I am Chris Matichuk, the PM for PCTV Tuner Devices. Just to let you know that I have been watching this thread, and have taken the comments to heart.

What We've done: We've verified that this issue appears to be localized to certain tuners, and even certain drivers. As you can see from several examples in this thread, the issue goes away with an updated driver from the IHV. Further, some of the highest volume PCI tuners do not have this issue, and this is likely why *no* PC OEM has reported it, and why it hasn't been on our radar.

But it does point to an issue in the driver implementation. Something that would have been great to catch in the WLP tests for a TV Tuner (self certification tests for the Windows Vista logo). Unfortunately, it wasn't included. And, I'm not really sure how we could incorporate this as it depends on having certain headend equipment setup in a certain way to simulate the issue. As a note, we haven't been able to simulate the scenario in our Redmond office using our headend equipment and the tuners mentined in this thread as having an issue.

I will notify a broad set of semiconductor partners and IHVs about the issue. This will help.

What will also help is if you contact the IHV directly and log your complaint.

Thanks for your assistance on this. Your passion is appreciated. If you have additional feedback, Jessica knows where to find me.

And thank you Jessica for the outstanding job supporting this forum.Big Smile><img src=" src="http://thegreenbutton.com/emoticons/emotion-2.gif">

Re: KMYT and Vista Media Center not Working?

I have an Avermedia A180 and Hauppauge HVR-1600 in my system.

They will both tune to every other local channel but channel 41 on digital, which is apparently actually broadcast on frequency 42.

    Ch 1021, 1022
    ch 1061, 1062
    ch 1081, 1082
    ch 1111, 1112, 1113, 1114
    ch 1231
    ch 1471

All the above come in great on Vista MCE.  So if its a driver issue that is causing 1411 to not come in and you understand it, explain it to me so I can harass Avermedia and Hauppauge about it.

Re: KMYT and Vista Media Center not Working?

Below is an e-mail I just fired off to Hauppage.  It might also help if the KMYT engineers confirm that they are broadcasting on an offset of the carrier frequency.  If they are not on an offset it actually may be a problem with their headend equipment.  It may also help if their engineers talk to the Hauppage engineers.

    Product:  HVR-1600
    Driver version:  1.62.25129.0
    Driver date: 5/9/07

    OS: Vista 64-bit Ultimate
    App:  Vista Media Center

    Station:  KMYT-DT
    Channel:  41-1, 41-2
    Frequency Assignment:  42

Even though Vista shows full signal strength for 41-1 and 41-2 I get a "no signal" error when I try to change to those channels.  My TV can tune those channels just fine.  When I had XP using your software, I was also able to tune these channels.

It is my understanding that MS changed Vista to read the embedded frequency offset information in the carrier signal to determine if the channel is on an offset, and what offset it is.  If the driver for the tuner doesn't support this command, it won't tune the channel.  It shows up as full signal strength in the channel scan, because the scanner doesn't depend on this information.

Is this correct?  If so, when will you release a driver to fix this?  The only reason I bought a TV tuner and Vista was to use Media Center to tune/record these and other channels.  Thank you.

Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate come with a decent TV tuner/ DVR program called Media Center.  Other software for other operating systems will also work.  You will also need a TV tuner add-in card for your computer.  They are usually less than $100.

If you are using Windows Vista, I recommend that you determine whether you can tune 41-1 while you are still within the period that you can take your tuner card back to the retailer and try a different one.  Otherwise you will be waiting for a driver update that may never come.

Hauppage's response sounds like they aren't going to do anything about it:

I've tried a couple different drivers.  Windows will let me roll back to a driver from 4/12/2007 ver 1.62.25108.0  But I have obviously already tried that one.  I was told 6 months ago that this new driver that fixes this issue was coming out in 2 months.  When are you going to release it?

Its dependent on the software developers, if the update has not been
released yet but it would be on its way with a new update shortly.  For 64
bit you should be using 3.2

Re: KMYT and Vista Media Center not Working?

Ugh, this is so annoying because there's so many good shows on KMYT that I'm missing out on.  I didn't know there was a Jail show, that shows badass.

ATI just released a new driver for the ATI TV Wonder 650 but I can't install it because their Catalyst Install Manager always fails on me for some reason.

Very annoyed about this... wish there was way to fix it.

Is anyone able to watch KMYT successfully on Vista?  If so, which tuner card are you using?
