Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
First of all to everyone who seems to think that having a dog park means letting your dog run wild in a public place, that's not what a dog park is about. Adog park is a place where responsilble dog owners can take their dogs to get exercise and let out some of their energy without having to take them to a public park. Think about it, if there was somewhere just for the dogs then when parents take their children to a public park there wouldn't be any poo on the ground where your child is playing because the dogs wouldn't be there... They would be at the DOG park. Second to the people wanting to open a park but are afraid of the liability of someone getting bit, all dog parks have waivers that every person must sign before entering the park stating that if that person is to get bit or scratched or attacked in any way it is not the responsibility of the park owner. So having said that, a dog park in Tulsa would not only benafit the dogs and owners of the city, but also the non-pet owners of the city. It is a way to seperate a child's playground from a dogs bathroom and allow dogs to be socalized with the other dogs of the city.

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
The question of liability is really just goofy, IMO. If there is a fenced-in area that says "Dog Park," people have reasonable warning that dogs will be there. We should just have a sign that says "use at your own risk, city of Tulsa bears no responsibility" or some such jazz. Its kind of like if someone were to go swimming in a lake with no lifeguard. If they're going to enjoy the lake, that comes with the assumed risk that they may drown. If someone is going to enjoy a dog park, that comes with the assumed risk that dogs sometimes bite, or sometimes fight with other dogs.
Maybe I'm alone here, but I believe in personal responsibility. I'm also a firm believer that life happens, and not everything requires a lawsuit. Folks these days can't get a papercut without looking to sue the paper manufacturer.

A park for dogs to run free in? That won't last long. Somebody out there will ruin it for everyone.

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
I don't think we should kill the idea before it has a chance to be born, though. A dog park is not really a whole park with loose-running dogs. It generally means one fenced-in area inside the park specifically for dogs. The only real problem I forsee is people possibly dumping unwanted dogs into the fence. Otherwise, possible bites and possible fights are something that people should accept as a reasonable risk when using that part of the park.
BTW, are there any updates to the building of the dog park? Anybody?

Well, ya know, if Tulsa would enforce their spay/neuter law, that wouldn't be an issue, but that's a whole 'nother problem. :)

oh yea, Tulsa has that. I live in the country. I don't worry about those Nazi laws that Tulsa has with animals. Don't get me wrong, some I understand but some I don't.

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
Same here. I moved out by Beggs because I thought living in Bixby that I'd be able to get one of Tulsa County's hobbyist exemptions for my dogs. (I'm qualified. Loki's got like 6 titles, and the two pups are being shown.) But Bixby said Tulsa county's laws don't apply there, and basically, while you can have horses, chickens and cows in Bixby, you can't have more than 3 dogs, so I was left out. (My dad has two, which puts us up to 5.) I believe their hobbyist permits make some kind of sense -- making a person be some semblance of responsible in order to breed, and so on -- but the idea that a person can be living in Tulsa county, but not be able to get one is just stupid.

Only one more day to go. In Maple Park yesterday I noticed a man and woman with two dogs eyeballing us. All of a sudden one of his dogs let out a huge volcanic steamer. At this point the Man saw I was watching, reached in his pocket, got a plastic baggie, handed it to his wife, who picked it up while he left. Come on, people, you don't let dogs lay steamers the size of a lawn furniture in a Children's park, then leave it.

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
its not to spoil our dogs and treat them like "little people" its incredibly unhealthy for a high energy animal to NEVER run. yes they can run in little circles in the house and they can run back and forth in the backyard but they need mental stimulation and they need to play. dogs are highly intelligent and need alot of excersize . many people have pets in apartments and the dogs NEVER get to run.
not to mention its just nice to be able to go out with your pet and the family and spend quality time without having to hold onto a leash the whole time.
if you have a problem with the dog crap everywhere you should support getting a dog park... unless you plan on taking your children to the dog park without a dog. there will be less dogs in your park coz theyll be able to go to the park just for them.

What about all the doggie poop? And another problem I see is if the Pit Bull owners bring their precious mutts and let them run loose. IMO.......these Dog Parks need to be out in the country like the remote control airplane people do. But even at that your still going to have a problem with people bringing their jaws of death Pit Bulls with them.
