Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
When I asked about the dog park at the Dog Dish they mentioned that they are working with the mayor on it...
But they said that some where in Woodward park there is an area that is partially fenced??? Supposedly that's where a bunch of people take their dogs (and sometimes off leash). The lady at the counter said she hasn't ever seen anybody there but another lady said that it depends on when you go..

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
Hello
I am working on plans to open a dog training facility, kennel and vetrianarians office combined with a dog park in the Tulsa area. Part of the planning is to guage the popularity or acceptance of such a facility. The dog park service would be free or for a minimal fee.
We are proponets of responsible dog ownership and training of both dogs and owners.
Please let me know the level of interest you have in such a complex.
Thanks

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
I've toyed with the idea of opening a dog park myself. I'd love to have a place to take my two pups to go have some fun.
I believe the dog friendly joints have signs posted saying dogs are welcome. If you don't like it, don't go in.
I used to walk riverside before I joined a gym, and I'd have to dodge dog poo, very annoying. Jenks riverwalks has little poo bag stations set up every so often, with a waste containter next to it. I've seen people use it, since it was available. I've never had to avoid poo there.......

If you plan to open a dog park where dogs can run free off leash, you better get really good insurance, cause when someone gets bit, or someones "fluffy" is eaten by a bigger badder dog, you could be looking at a law suit. Hey, don't get mad, I AM a dog lover, I just believe in keeping my dog home, protecting my property, making doggy sculptures in my yard, shedding hair all over my stuff like God intended, I do take her to pet stores once in awhile,( on a leash,) and occasionally to the bank, but she gets way too excited 'cause the bank I used to go to always gave her a doggie treat, and she expects one from every drive thru now.

Someone should take Amy Winehouse to a dog park, yeesheesh, have you all seen the pic with the article " Amy Winehouse checks into rehab"? OMG she should check into a hair salon immediately after the rehab.

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
Patriot, dog parks typically have a fenced in area just for the dogs. People who go in there take the risk upon themselves, as there would probably be signs designating it a leash-free area, use at your own risk, etc. I haven't heard of legal issues stemming from such a thing, although undoubtedly people have tried.
Aurelius, I personally wouldn't take my dogs to a dog park, however I think they are great things for people to have access to. There are two large training clubs in Tulsa (Companion Dog School of Tulsa and Tulsa Dog Training Club), but the more the merrier. So my level of interest for myself isn't that great, since I train at TDTC and am soon to be moving to the Beggs area. But I think for the dog owners overall, it would be a very positive step.

bahamutt99:
An off-leash dog park would involve a fenced area for the dogs to be loose in. Its not as though they'd be running amok in public. And I don't think the OP is asking for dogs to be allowed in restaurants, but it would be nice if there were more of the dog-friendly businesses that other cities have. Having places be open to dogs gives them more opportunities for important socialization. I don't see anything crazy about it. :)
The day I went to my dentist, and he had his two huge dogs running around the office while I was having my teeth worked on was the last visit to him, so I agree, there are places where even though you think it is great for your dogs to accompany you, the general public may not agree. BUT....let me say, sometimes when I am trying to eat my grossly overpriced food in a restaurant and they seat me next to a bunch of slime covered, whinning kids, throwing food all everwhere including me, I WISH there were dogs there instead of the kids. Before anyone jumps all over me.....I LOVE KIDS AND DOGS, have worked extensively with both, I have found dogs usually have better manners and discipline.

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
What I hate the most are people who won't pick up their dogs poo. It's like a bunch of little land mines around here. How hard is it? My dog goes and I take bag with me each time. It takes two seconds.
Patriot, I agree about the kids in restaurants thing. I can't stand it when parents allow their grubby little nose miners to fix their own plates at a buffet. They get their nasty hands all over everything. Grosses me out.

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
I would LOVE to see dog parks in Tulsa! There is already one planned in Mohawk park as part of Vision 2025, and I am extrememly grateful for this! However I would also love to have another one closer to where we live.
As far as all of the nay-sayers re. off-leash dog parks, if you do the research you will find arguments on both sides of the fence agreeing and disagreeing with your concerns. (Frankly, those with the most knowledge of animal behaviour (trainers, etc.) are the least concerned with the safety issues.)
Therefore, I can only speak from my own experience. Many outdoor-friendly communities throughout the US have off-leash dog parks. (The OKC area had 3 or 4 the last I checked - see http://www.pawok.com/ to get a taste of the fun.) The ones I have gone to are an absolute joy to visit! This is what I have found:
1. I have never seen dogs get angry with one another. This goes right along with comments I've heard trainers make that dogs off the leash feel a sense of control with their environment, and therefore feel less of a need to try to take control (in the form of aggression.)
2. Owners are customarily very considerate about picking up after their dogs - and for the small minority who aren't, they are either asked to comply, or others will simply pick up after them (out of respect for the park.) Those who are conscientious enough to make a trip to the dog park are generally those who will take the time to be responsible with these types of things.
3. Yes, the dogs will bark, but it isn't the major barkfest that some people think it might be. :) And more often than not, it is a bark at their owner to hurry up and throw that frisbee already!
4. There are generally signs posted that people enter at their own risk (most dog parks are entirely fenced) - the city's way of covering itself. Also, that owners are held liable for any injury their animal might cause to another - therefore discouraging those who might have a very aggressive dog from entering. However, again, I've never seen or heard of a problem with any of this.
I could go on, but I might put you to sleep so I'll stop here. :)
I must say when I first heard of an off-leash dog park, even though I am a huge dog-lover I also had the exact same missgivings I'm reading in this forum. Those fears were absolutely put to rest with my first dog park visit. I feel it's pretty safe to say that after people become acquainted with, and educated about, off-leash dog parks, they will be bringing fido along for the fun with the rest of us!
So I say, more power to you, for those who are advocating this wonderful addition to our beautiful city!

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
What would be nice is if it were an exclusive dog park, where you had to show a copy of your dog's vaccination records in order to get a license, key, whatever to get in there. Disease and parasites are another reason I am wary of dog parks. If they are open to all, what would stop someone from bringing, say, a Parvo dog in there?
You also have the issue of people dumping dogs they don't want into the fence for someone else to find. However, the point could be argued that someone who would dump their dog at a dog park would be just as comfortable dumping it in someone's backyard, or at a grooming shop, vet clinic, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I'm in favor of the dog park. As said earlier, I wont use it myself because I don't feel its an appropriate place for my breed. But I think its a good thing to have. Just that these concerns would need to be addressed.

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
I would DEFINITELY take my dogs to the dog park!! Obviously a dog park is not some place you would take your dog if they are aggressive or diseased and I think most people will realize that (and SURELY there will be a sign posted?)
My dogs LOVE to meet other dogs and it is great to socialize them!! Sometimes we have friends over with their dogs which is great but I'd love a place with a creek or something that my labs could swim in... taking them to the lake is just too much of a hassle. And where else are they going to swim??

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
OK, I am stymied here. I see billions of dogs on the riverpark, I see a couple billions more on the trail I take to the Pedestrain bridge. I see Big dogs, little dogs, dogs that climb on rocks, Tough dogs, wimpy dogs Even colored like a fox!
The back trail I seldom see them on a leash and they just go about there doggy business without a care in the world.

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
OK! After reading many opinions about the public catering to the dog population I must add my own opinion! I am a dog person! I also respect the people that aren't dog lovers. We banned smoking in almost all public businesses. Why, well for health reasons mostly, and I am not a smoker - thank god! They smell awful and they make your clothes and hair and hands stink too! I am leaning more toward the idea that even though I am a responsible dog lover who cleans up behind my pooch and bathes him regularly, not all pet owners do! I think people get all up in issues that don't concern them in any way. People who say dog parks should not be allowed more than likely would not be visiting a park for dogs or even own a dog! Honestly there are battles to be chosen wisely! When it matters to you - be concerned. If it affects you be concerned. When it doesn't leave these precious pets to the people that love them and love taking care of them!
Although part of the dogs in places that serve food is a bit much to grasp, but like I stated before - If you decide to visit one of these places so that you and fido can get some lunch, it would be safe to say you probably know what you are in for!
Personally I don't care to have my pooch or any pooch begging me for food while I am eating, nor do I desire to sit next to fido after he just ran a marathon in the river sand!
I probably would visit a place to eat with my pooch, occassionally. But I know what's involved in it when I do!

Aurelius, I am a dog owner with 3 children and an ill husband. I would take my dog to your park in a second, she needs to have some fun! I'll be watching for your progress.
As for all of the entertaining posts, I think you all should agree to disagree. You can only control your own actions. Right?

Re: Why is Tulsa such a 'dog un-friendly' city?
Maybe someone should mention Oklahoma City has a nice dog park on Lake Hefner. :D
It has seperate fenced areas for large and small breeds. I suppose so the little dogs don't get run over by the big dogs. Aggressive dogs are prohibited. The fence extends out into a channel of water. Some dogs play in it and some don't. Anyways, from my experience there was more tail wagging than barking. I loved it and my dog had a good time too.
Now I can't say I ever saw anyone not pickup after their dog but, I did notice proof that some owners don't pickup after their own dog. I was stunned because there are signs everywhere and lots of bag dispensers and trash cans.
Not to go off on a rant, but that's my pet peeve. Being a responsible pet owner (picking up after it) is required by law. City ordinance provides a $200 fine for each occurance of not picking up after your pet (cat or dog). But I digress.
Why is Tulsa dog unfriendly city? I don't think it is unfriendly. I think its an economic issue. If the market for a dog friendly business is high enough to make a profit after the investment then some entreprenure will start one. Tulsa isn't large enough of a city to sustain those kind of establishments. Maybe in a few years it will grow into one, 2025, I dunno.
Last word, dog park good.
