Re: English Only in Oklahoma
Cricket-I understand now, thanks for clearing it up. It's hard to understand people on this board and at times hard to clarify what I mean on here. I'm much better speaking to people in person. We just need to all meet somewhere in a big place and do nothing but chat on these issues for an hour or two, lol.
Tega-Again, you are saying my refusal to learn a different language is part of the problem in this world. you are linking this with closed mindedness. Maybe I am closed minded to learning a different language. I just don't see how i'm part of the problem. I'm open to anyones culture. Hell, I don't mind sittin down and talkin to people about cultures and comparing. That's always interested me. But, my refusal to learn a language is mostly due to the fact that I don't feel that I have to so therefore I have no desire to. Now, I'm sure if one day I do find a certain language appealing that I'll learn it, but right now no language appeals to me and if I don't have to learn it then I won't. Just like Sign language. Right now, I'm interested in it. Plus, I believe it would help me more. Therefore, I'd like to learn it. Right now, I don't have time to sit down and try to learn it. I'm not trying to offend or anything. I just have no desire to learn another language at this point.

Well, glad we got this straightened out, I'm not much for expressing my thoughts on here either, I'm more use to getting the information I need for the projects I'm working on, in fact I don't even use total proper English on here, I get lazy. It would be nice to sit down and chat about how we percieve different issues, but I for one really don't have the time, I'm working on issues that some on here don't like, but I can't seem to get across why I feel the way I do, I respect every one's opinions and how they feel, I may not agree, but that is what make the world go around. I'm happy to put thing to where you don't feel offended, cause that isn't me, to do that to people. By the way! Tega is a good person, I hope to be friends with almost every one on here, cause I really enjoy people.. Some on here that don't acknowledge others and their feelings, are the only one's I don't really associate with, but I do like a good debate, and I sort of had one with you, thanks. (cricket)

Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying. It just seemed like you were saying "We should all be speaking English anyway so I don't care about anyone elses language."
I see what you are saying now though.

Stomer, I can see where Tega assumed you weren't interested in language, it's just that you don't wish to learn another language. That is fine. Now we can all be friends again, YES!! (cricket)

Re: English Only in Oklahoma
I don't care one way or another about how much of anyones heritage they retain after sliding in here to live in the USA. Don't think the people pushing this bill care either, you are all allowed to have your opinion, mine is that to live anywhere without being able to understand, speak and read the local language is a dangerous thing to do, how can you know the laws if you can't read them, how can you obey the street signs, fire exit signs in buildings, how do you know what your child is being taught in school if you cannot read the books? How would you l ike to be bleeding internally, or your child having swallowed some medicine and take them to the hospital, and not be able to communicate the problem to the doctor, or understand what he was saying? If you come here to become an American, enjoy the life, priviledges, but you don't care enough to learn the language, what does that say about you? I really don't have to deal with too many non-English speaking people in my job, but we do have one Hispanic girl who cleans, she is so sweet and nice, speaks and reads no English, but they write the instructions in English in a little book for her, and she can't read it, they don't know I guess, if they did, they would ask for her to be replaced, anyway she drags me around to show her what she is supposed to do, that isn't really in my job description, so I have started to check the book as soon as I come to work, and just write in the interpretation in the book in Spanish, it has worked well so far, and she has been able to continue working here because of it. I feel strongly if you visit, yes learn enough of the host language to get by, if you plan to live there, you need to make it a priority to learn the language. And none of your opinions are a problem, thank God we live in a society where people still HAVE their individual opinions.

Re: English Only in Oklahoma
Pretty much, I really don't care to learn anyones language unless I'm interested. I usually listen to rock bands that speak german and wear some shirts every now and then so yes, I'm reaching for a translation so I know. Be bad if you were wearing a shirt and didn't know what it ment or said.
No, my hang up on the whole issue is being denied a job because I didn't speak it. Seems to me with this law passing that won't be the case anymore. Because, if you don't know the language now then you'll need to learn it.
As far as catching an illegal and automatically deporting them. I believe that if you are caught you should have the chance to become a citizen(clean record, well a decent one and learn and speak the language.) And, if it costs money. It needs to not. I think it's stupid having to pay to be a citizen in a country.

Re: English Only in Oklahoma
I've been quiet for a while since I rarely have time and if a make a comment a couple of you would get all mad at me.
I do have to say to Patriot1947 congratulation for helping that girl out. I was offered my job due to being bi-lingual and my boss wanted the Hispanic market as client as well as the Okie market. Anyways what I notice from several of my older clients when the write out a check, they have the numbers and then written out so they know that 150 is one hundred fifty. Ofcourse since they know I speak Spanish I do it for them. But they are not the only ones, I have Okies that I will write out their check and they sign it.
Here is my suggestion to help you and the girl. You say she clean. Tell her to buy a note book and for her to write the duties in English and help her translate and have her write it in Spanish. After that she can look at her book and she would be reading both English and Spanish. If she really wants to learn she would do it.
English only doesn't affect me since I don't care to recieve anything in Spanish. But I do think of my mom when she was with us and my step dad. He is like 85 and for English to be demanded on him is horrible, thank God he lives in South Texas and everyone speak both language due to being a border town. But can you imagine, English is hard enough for us to learn, their are so many words that sound alike but mean different things. Should I use to, too or two or eight , ate. My husband will sometime here something on the news and will ask me what a words means and I have to ask him back. How was it used before I can tell him. That is the only problem I would have for the older Americans that came from state where Spanish was always available, well maybe we don't have anyone like that in Oklahoma. Then we have the accent problem, some Americans get mad when someone is learning to speak English and their accent is heavy. I know we get Asian and Middle East people where I work. I have to stop and concentrate on what they are saying to understand due to their heavy accent. Sometimes I write it out to make sure.
Well I guess will see if the bill passes or not. I would like to read the bill to see what it all involves. Maybe someone could post it so we all could read it.

Very true, English is the hardest language to learn, yes if a person can help another fellow person out, what is the harm involved? Yes, older people are so set in their ways, it's hard for them to learn another language. True a lot of Americans you can't understand what they're saying. But for Oklahoma to try to enforce only English, is rather stupid, since America is already and English country, Oklahoma is more or less, saying they don't want other nationalities here. They expect them to learn their English else where I guess. Well, if they have to learn it else where, then why come here to live, work and spend money! I guess Terrill and gov. Henry want to go down in HISTORY, for look at what we did!! There is a lot of people fighting this stupid bill.. (cricket)

Re: English Only in Oklahoma
Don't misunderstand me here guys, as I said before, I like Mexicans as a people, they are for the most part happy, friendly, hard working people, but I do think they need to learn to speak English, not only to save money and frustration for the regular citizens of the state, but for their own good and safety. I am for the bill to make it official, however, I don't see any purpose in being mean and hateful about it either.
