    Tornados - Seriously?

My favorite Tornado warning is "To seek Shelter Underground". What is safe in that? My body won't be eaten by scavengers because I have a few tons of rubble layered on top of me?

My second is "Who's at risk", Specifically, "People who may not understand the warning due to a language barrier." I could see where a siren could be mistaken for a police car and the next day we find Illegal Immigrants dead in the bushes.

     My Third is, "
If caught outside or in a vehicle, lie flat in a nearby ditch or depression." Um, do Tornados ignore ditches?

I bring this up as Everytime there is a Tornado, we have a lot of pictures. Even I have been outside with a camera while Mobile parks are relocated in Arkansas.

I remember in the 60's we where taught to "Duck and Cover". As long as you where under a desk, you would be safe, everyone else would burst into flames and get slammed into buildings.

the 2000's we Had Duct Tape and plastic.

What does everyone do when a Tornado Warning comes on? Do you actually follow the do's and don'ts, or is it to the point we are Immune to the sirens and warnings?

    Re: Tornados - Seriously?

I go to the front door and look at the sky, turn on the tv (if we still have electricity), and look at my maps to see where the weather is coming from.  In the process of doing all that, I text my kids and let them know what's up in case they haven't heard.  Sometimes, they've texted me to let me know the sirens are going off.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up for me as well.

LOL, just what I thought. The first two times I went and coward in my tub, after that I have always been out on my porch looking for one.

    Re: Tornados - Seriously?

... couple years ago my family and I were sitting on our back porch enjoying the later afternoon cool breeze.  It got dark and windy fairly quickly and all of a sudden the wind changed directions and whipped up from our backs - spooky feeling hits us... then I'd say maybe 10 seconds after that happened the tornado sirens went off.  We all looked at each other and ducked in the house to turn on the weather.  Sure enough they were saying a tornado had formed over the Brookside area and it was heading NE.  That one set down on top of a truck stop and killed some people.

My first instinct has always been to grab my camera, my second is to get a look at a live radar.
Dragging matresses to the inside hall are waaaay down the list...
and the last tornado I actually took shelter from was May 1999 when they clocked the fastest wind speed recorded on the planet.
(note to self:  matresses wont help when the wind strips the topsoil down to bedrock).

The proper hillbilly response would be to get a beer and go sit on the front porch.

strap myself to a tree, lol.  No, tornado's don't ignore ditches but usually can't get down in them.  Well, depends on the ditch.  Thing is though, between being out in a field or ducking in a ditch.  Two choices come to mind.  Get blown away(from being out in a field) or drown(from the water being poured on from the rain in this ditches.)

I'll tell you something right now.  If you have no shelter, nobody near you that has shelter then you all might as well sit out on the porch with a 6er.

On a serious note, you can outrun them.  They're not that fast.
